The Lonely Sea and The Sky at The Troubadour

Apparently this was their stage debut and the last time they played was in someones backyard.  For three ‘stage virgins’ The Lonely Sea and The Sky found their feet pretty damn quick.

Velociraptor at the troubadour

Someone said “nine”, but I’m pretty sure I counted ten.  Nine guys, one girl or eight guys, one girl make up this loud, aurally complex sound called Velociraptor.  They rocked out so hard that Everett True (The Thin Kids) gallantly relinquished his claim on being the best band in Brisbane and handed over the reins to Velociraptor. The Thin Kids @ The Troubadour

What can I say? Seriously… They were funny as hell, highly entertaining but scored pretty low towards the chance of ever being swooped up by some talent scout and offered a contract… but then, I’m pretty sure that’s the point!

I heart hiroshima at the brisbane powerhouse

Story and Photos by Kristian Hollins

Midway through their second set of the day, punctuating a break between songs, Matthew Somer’s, lead guitarist and vocalist for Brisbane’s own indie pop trio, I Heart Hiroshima, runs to one side of the stage and, leaning over, hidden from the audience behind a large amp, hocks and spits down into unused stage space.

“Gaaah! Put it in a cup,” responds Susie Patten, the band’s drummer and lead vocalist, as Cam, the backing guitarist and vocalist, stands by, a bemused expression written in the small smile playing over his features.

Castanets @ The Troubadour

Photos & Review by Tara Downie

The Troubadour kicked off the New Year with *Over Ambition #6* featuring headline act Ramond Raposa AKA Castanets (USA). When asked to review Castanets I wasn’t entirely sure what I was going to expect or even if I would like the music.

Astral Aliens @ Club 299

Rock band Astral Aliens headlined at heavy metal Club 299 over the weekend.  The band are doing a home tour “Direct from L.A.” after taking up residence in California in late 2007.  The Aussie band (with an American lead guitarist) rocked the club hard on Friday night.

Planet Fiction @ X&Y Bar

Planet Fiction (c) BLR 09

“RRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRR”

I fucking hate Sepultura!  I hate bands that scream their fucking lungs out and cause listeners to go home with severe migraines.  Being someone with no taste for thrash/death metal when a singer starts belting out notes from the depths of their stomach, this is the first comparison I make.

This however, is not the experience I had with Planet Fiction.

The Deadnotes (featuring The Legend!) @ The Troubadour

The Deadnotes & The Legend!

In all honesty I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about this before I went; reviewing the master.  I was keen to just settle on photographs for the night, leave the notepad at home and avoid the critical eye.

But, up walked Everett True (The Legend!), plonked down his canvas bag on the front of the stage, sucked back a neck full of water and began the first song.
